End-to-end I-REC issuance advisory, OTC certificate trading, I-TRACK registry management, and corporate Scope 2 procurement strategy — across Asia, Africa, and the Middle East.
What is I-REC?
The I-REC Standard
The International Renewable Energy Certificate (I-REC) Standard is a globally recognised framework for tracking the generation and consumption of renewable electricity. Each I-REC represents one megawatt-hour (MWh) of renewable energy fed into the grid — issued with unique, non-duplicable attributes covering technology type, generation location, and period.
Energy Attribute Certificates
Energy Attribute Certificates (EACs) are the tradable instruments that convey the environmental value of renewable generation. I-RECs are issued, transferred, and retired on the I-TRACK platform — providing a transparent, auditable chain of custody from generator to consumer. The final retirement is the act that supports a corporate Scope 2 or voluntary claim.
Why They Matter
For multinationals operating across Asia, Africa, and the Middle East — where European Guarantees of Origin (GOs) are not available — I-RECs are the only credible, globally accepted instrument for demonstrating renewable energy procurement under the GHG Protocol Scope 2 Market-Based Method, RE100, and the Science Based Targets initiative.
Global Market Outlook 2026
Technology Mix (Capacity)
Top 5 Markets (Active MW)
2025 YTD Additions (MW)
Solar Engine Acceleration
Solar utility devices grew from 617 in 2021 to 1,514 in 2024 — a near-6× acceleration. For 2025 YTD, solar accounts for 77% of all new capacity additions (7,317 MW out of 9,513 MW).
The India Dominance
India registered 3,683 MW of new active capacity in Q1 2025 alone, already matching its entire 2023 output. With 2,573 active devices, it is the most diversified high-volume market globally.
Geothermal Opportunity
Despite only 64 active devices, geothermal produces 3,971 MW, making it the largest thermal niche. Massive untapped potential remains in markets like Indonesia which has >2,400MW capacity but only 9 devices.
Regional Distribution
South America dominates by raw capacity (106 GW, 49% of global), driven almost entirely by Brazil's 78 GW hydro base. However, Southeast Asia and South Asia are where the active growth is happening.
Growth Trajectory
Active capacity additions grew from 12,766 MW in 2023 to 16,604 MW in 2024, a 30% jump. The full year 2025 could reach 35,000–38,000 MW based on current Q1 trajectory.
Activation Disparities
The global activation rate is 74.2%, though this varies wildly. Bangladesh (99.4%) and Peru (98.2%) are near-perfect, while UAE (20.8%) and Uganda (19.5%) face structural certification delays.
